Applied Optimization (AO) Job Description

 

Job Title: Electro-Optical (EO) Engineer                                     Reports to: Space Team Lead

FLSA Status: Part-Time (Non-Exempt)/Full Time                          Department: Space Science

 

Position Objective:

  • Support research and development activities for atmospheric turbulence profiling using a Rayleigh laser beacon and atmospheric sensing system with a Shack Hartmann sensor array.
  • Coordinate activities with respect to the diverse team of scientists and engineers working on the project.
  • Support the design, integration, and testing of custom telescopes with a team of engineers and astronomers.
  • Operate and maintain AO’s Optics Lab and support laboratory activities, including but not limited to optical alignment, calibrating equipment, and equipment inventory.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Design, model, analyze, and test optical and electro-optical/photonics systems using commercial, off-the-shelf hardware.
  • Prepare technical documentation on E-O systems including reports, manuals, and procedures.
  • Conduct research and development in complex optical systems using pulsed and CW lasers; apply the research to achieve required optical system performance.
  • Develop system and component specifications, tolerances, simulations, and test procedures; modeling/optimization of sensor performance in optical conditions.
  • Conduct or oversee opto-mechanical system design, test, and installation.
  • Develop alignment and test plans and procedures for developed/installed systems.
  • Troubleshoot alignment of optical systems in place for research; provide error analysis, analyze test data, and produce written optical system technical reports.
  • Other duties may include:
    • Provide leadership in the selection of small-business research proposals to the DoD.
    • Write and submit research proposals.
    • Provide liaison to academic communities providing electro-optical and photonic research support of atmospheric research using a Rayleigh beacon.
    • Support field experiments conducted during both working hours and off hours at remote sites near Dayton, Ohio.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum: MS candidate in Optical, Electro-Optical, or related field
  • Desired: PhD candidate/graduate in Electro-Optics/Photonics
  • Experience/proficiency with Zemax or other ray tracing software
  • Knowledge of fielded E-O systems, particularly telescopes
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Results oriented with a sense of urgency
  • Good interpersonal skills, team player, ability to work well with others and establish effective relationships throughout the organization
  • US citizen (preferred) or permanent resident pursuing citizenship
  • Ability to obtain security clearance
