The Additive Manufacturing (AM) team at Applied Optimization, Inc. (AO) focuses on research and development in metallurgy and metals processing. We work with government and corporate clients and partners to develop viable solutions to complex problems in the area of metal additive manufacturing (3D printing metal) in order to meet our customer’s specific needs.
What We Do
We solve complex additive manufacturing problems using a variety of traditional and novel scientific models to develop software that simulate the printing process.
Additive Manufacturing Experience:
- Thermal, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and distortion prediction
- Development of databases for the selection of optimized building parameters
- Closed-loop process control
- Prediction of solidification parameters and thermal cycling

Sharing with the Community
We are committed to advancing and developing new processes to further the field of additive manufacturing. For the last three years, AO has been a member of America Makes, an organization that focuses on advancing the AM field. In 2016, AO won a $40,000 prize for a laser powder bed process modeling challenge set up by DARPA, Penn State University, and America Makes. The purpose of the challenge was to spur development in the area of computational modeling. Since the AM process is complex, computational modeling is one of the means that can further develop the AM field. AO has significant experience in computation modeling, which allowed the AM team to compete in this challenge and help further the field.
AO is located in the Fairborn, Ohio, area which is adjacent to the Wright Patterson Air Force Base and across from Wright State University. We have been able to foster relationships with academia from several top-notch universities. We employ many students and graduates from the Dayton-area universities such as Cedarville University, Miami University, University of Dayton, and Wright State University. Our undergrad and graduate interns gain invaluable skills in their fields as we progressively spur them to develop and take on more responsibilities. They also develop skills useful in the industry such as project management, report writing, client communication, and critical thinking. We are a big supporter of our employees furthering their education at the graduate level by providing tuition assistance. All of our relationships with the academic world have helped bring about significant development in the AM field.
